Purpose

Canopy Behavior Solutions, LLC is a private ABA therapy provider. Our goal is to teach clients to “learn how to learn” by focusing on the prerequisites to education so that clients can be successful in any environment. This may include a comprehensive transition and maintenance program, including training of educational staff, as necessary, to ensure that clients can participate in the least restrictive environment, with minimal to no supports.

In all learning environments skills are taught using the principles of ABA. We first teach each client the reinforcing value of learning, so that the individual can “learn how to learn.” From there, we begin to teach the skills necessary to function as independently as possible in the natural environment, with the goal of fading ABA services when possible and appropriate. Our primary focus is teaching functional communication skills, social skills, daily living and self-help skills, and academic skills (pre-academic and academic skills). Within these four areas, behavior management is addressed as needed, with a focus on reducing any inappropriate behaviors by replacing these behaviors with functionally equivalent and appropriate replacement behaviors.

Mission Statement

Canopy Behavior Solutions, LLC is committed to improving the quality of life for our clients and their families utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). We seek to increase community awareness and acceptance of individuals with a range of differences in brain function and behavioral traits. We strive to provide educators with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively motivate and instruct clients with communication and social/behavioral needs.

What is an ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior. ABA utilizes evidence-based interventions based on the principles of learning theory to support the development of new skills that bring about meaningful change to the individual and his or her family.

Some of the skills targeted in ABA therapy include:

»   Learning to communicate and interact with others

»   Developing self-control and self- management skills

»   Learning skills of daily living such as dressing and using the bathroom

»   Learning to play independently and with others

»   Improving academic skills such as reading and math

»   Decreasing challenging behavior such as self-injury or aggression

»   Building independence

How does ABA therapy work?

ABA Therapy typically follows these general steps; however, these experiences are individualized based on each child’s needs.

  1. A qualified BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) will lead and oversee a child’s therapy program.
  2. After a detailed assessment of the child’s strengths and underdeveloped skills, the BCBA will design an individualized program targeting developmentally appropriate skills including communication, social skills, self-care skills, play skills, and academic skills.
  3. Highly qualified and trained behavior therapists, working under the direct supervision of a BCBA, will help the child achieve these goals using prompting, modeling, and lots of positive reinforcement.
  4. Therapists take data continuously to monitor which skills are improving, which skills are not progressing, and how the program may need to be modified to ensure the child’s success.
  5. The BCBA will meet with the family regularly to review the child’s progress and make any needed changes to the program.

What Does an ABA Program Involve?

ABA can be provided in the home, school, community, or clinic.  The amount of therapy and the level of parent involvement varies according the individual needs of the child. Components of an ABA program may include observation of the behaviors in the natural setting, data collection, treatment planning and programming, 1:1 therapy, and parent and teacher training.

ABA programs for autism are not "one size fits all." ABA should not be viewed as a canned set of drills. Rather, each program is written to meet the needs of the individual learner.

The goal of any ABA program is to help each person work on skills that will help them become more independent and successful in the short term as well as in the future.
